UCAS: How to Apply for an Undergraduate Degree in the UK
UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with up to 5 choices. Steps, documents, IELTS UKVI, fees of £10,000–33,000 a year and the Student visa.
In short
- Undergraduate applications in the UK go through UCAS, and you can choose up to 5 courses.
- A degree usually takes 3 years; sandwich courses take 4 years and include a year of work experience.
- Tuition is £10,000–33,000 a year, with living costs on top.
- Universities ask for IELTS UKVI, and a high school average of at least 60 is recommended.
- Students without A Levels or the IB need to complete a Foundation program first.
A UCAS application comes down to a few steps: creating an account, adding your education and choices, attaching your personal statement and references, and paying the fee. With the right course choices and a clear plan, it is far more manageable than it first looks. EFC Education guides students through every step, from the UCAS application to the visa.
How long is an undergraduate degree in the UK?
Most UK degrees take 3 years. That is a year shorter than most degrees in Türkiye, which makes a real difference to both time and budget.
Minors and double majors are also available. Four-year "sandwich courses" build a year of work experience into the degree, so you graduate with real professional experience alongside your diploma.
How do you apply through UCAS?
UCAS is the central service for undergraduate applications to UK universities. One application lets you choose up to 5 courses, and it follows these steps:
- Create an account: enter your personal details.
- Education and choices: add your schools, your grades and the courses you want to apply for.
- Projects and work experience: share your projects and any work experience.
- Statements: add your personal statement and your references.
- Payment: pay the UCAS application fee.
When you pick your five choices, it is wise to balance ambitious options with ones where your chances of an offer are stronger. Your personal statement is where you show what your grades cannot, so explain with concrete examples why the subject interests you. References from teachers who know you well from class also make your application more convincing.
Which documents do you need?
- High school diploma and transcript
- A Level, IB or SAT scores
- IELTS or TOEFL result
- References and a personal statement
The exact list can vary by university and course, and EFC Education prepares it with you.
What are the entry requirements?
High school results: an average of at least 60 is recommended. The higher your average, the stronger the universities you can get into.
English: universities ask for IELTS UKVI. Students applying directly without a Foundation program can also be accepted with IELTS Academic.
Extra exams: AP, SAT and IB
Some universities may require AP or SAT results. The IB diploma is highly valued by universities and gives you an advantage.
What if you don't meet the requirements yet?
If your grades, English level or diploma are not yet enough for direct entry, you do not have to give up on the UK. One of these routes may suit you:
- Foundation: required for students without A Levels, it builds language and academic skills. Because high school in Türkiye lasts 12 years, most students without A Levels or the IB start their degree with a Foundation program.
- International Year One: for students whose grades or English level fall short, it offers a route into the second year of a degree.
- Conditional offer: students who do not yet meet every requirement receive an offer that becomes final once they do.
How much does a UK degree cost?
Tuition ranges from £10,000 to £33,000 a year, depending mainly on the city, the course and any scholarships. Accommodation, transport and food need to be added to your budget separately. Planning tuition and living costs as separate items from the start also makes it easier to prepare the bank statement you will need for your visa.
Fees differ between universities and can change over time, so we recommend checking current fees for the universities on your list with an EFC Education advisor.
What do you need for the UK student visa?
Once you have an offer, you apply for the Student visa (formerly known as Tier 4). You will need:
- A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your university
- Your IELTS UKVI result
- A bank statement
- Your transcript and diploma in English
