How to Apply to Study Abroad: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying to study abroad takes six steps: choose a program, meet the requirements, apply and pay the fee, get your visa, then plan housing and flights.

In short

Applying to study abroad usually comes down to six steps: choose your program, meet the language and document requirements, complete the application and pay the fee, apply for your visa once you have an offer, then arrange accommodation and flights. EFC Education guides students and their families through each of these steps.

  • Your first decision is the program: language school, certificate program, Foundation, undergraduate or master's.
  • Most applications ask for a language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL etc.), a diploma and transcript, reference letters and a personal statement.
  • In the UK, undergraduate applications go through UCAS, where you can choose up to 5 courses.
  • A student visa needs a confirmation of acceptance (CAS), your language test result, a bank statement and an English transcript and diploma.
  • For a master's, it is best to apply about 4 months before the course starts.

What are the steps of a study abroad application?

The details change from country to country, but for most students the process runs in the same order:

  1. Choose your program. Decide whether you want a short language course, a certificate that adds to your career, or a full university degree. If you finished high school in Türkiye without A Levels or the IB, you will usually start a UK degree with a Foundation year.
  2. Meet the requirements. Take a language test, gather your diploma and transcript, ask for reference letters and write your personal statement.
  3. Complete the application form. Applications are usually made online. You add your personal details, education history, course choices and letters.
  4. Pay the application fee. For UCAS undergraduate applications, for example, paying the application fee is the final step. Fees differ from one institution to another.
  5. Apply for your visa. Once you have an offer, you prepare your visa documents, pay the visa fee and submit your application.
  6. Get ready to leave. Arrange your accommodation, book your flights and plan your timeline around the course start date.

What do you need to study abroad?

Requirements depend on the program. For the programs we offer, the main ones are:

  • Language schools: When you start, you take a placement test and join a class that matches your level.
  • Foundation: IELTS 4.5 or an equivalent language certificate, your high school diploma and transcript, a reference letter, a statement of purpose and a copy of your passport.
  • Undergraduate: A high school diploma, A Level / IB / SAT scores, IELTS / TOEFL and references. A grade average of at least 60 is recommended.
  • Master's: Your undergraduate transcript, a personal statement, two reference letters, a detailed CV, UKVI IELTS 6.5 and your passport.
  • Master's in Italy: Diplomas and transcript, CV, motivation and reference letters, a language certificate of at least B1 for English, passport and photo, plus a portfolio for architecture and design.

Each school sets its own final list. EFC Education prepares the exact list for every student based on their program.

What should you watch out for on the application form?

The form is the first place a school gets to know you. Enter your grades, projects and any work experience in full, and order your choices realistically. In your personal statement, explain in your own words why you chose this subject and this country.

If your grades or language level are not there yet, you still have options. You may receive a conditional offer, or consider International Year One for an undergraduate degree or a Pre-Master for a master's. Read more on our undergraduate and master's pages.

Which documents do you need for the visa?

University study in the UK requires a Student visa (formerly called Tier 4). You will usually be asked for:

  • A CAS (confirmation of acceptance)
  • Your IELTS UKVI result
  • A bank statement
  • An English transcript and diploma

A valid passport and payment of the visa fee are also part of the process. For Foundation students, the sponsor's account must hold a set amount. Language school students apply for a short-term study visa that matches the course length, and it does not allow work.

When should you start?

Timing depends on the program and the country, but these windows are a good starting point:

  • Master's: Applications usually run from October to June. There is no fixed deadline, but applying about 4 months before the course starts is recommended. Pre-Master applications are open all year.
  • Undergraduate in Italy: Applications run from November to May.
  • Master's in Italy: For programs starting in September or October, apply between January and April; final enrolment takes place in June or July.
  • Foundation: Apply for your visa at least 3 months ahead.

Dates vary by school and can change, so confirm your timeline with EFC Education. Starting early gives you time for the language test and your documents.
